This past Easter I decided to make some towels for friends. I am posting some samples of towels I have made recently or in the past to give you some ideas. I know I always go hunting for ideas on others’ websites! 🙂 The font is from:
http://www.fancyfontsembroidery.com/store
The site owner allowed me to buy just the add ons instead of the whole alphabet and I then used Embird Font Engine and the Curlz Font. The little add ons have come in very handy on other projects as well. Hope you like the towels.
The towels you made for children is absolutely adorable. How did you add the trim and attach the towel? thanks Betty
Betty, I am not quite sure what it is you are asking? The towels came with the striped border and I just embroidered on top of that. On the girls’ towels, I added ricrac that was a velour type – kind of a similar fabric to the towel so that the towel stayed nice and soft. Regular ricrac tends to be little “harsh” on little hands.
I hope that answers your question.
Were did you purchase the alphabet you used on the butterfly towels?
Hi Oma,
I am also a Grandmother of 5 grandchildren. Their names are Michael, Andrew, Alec, Avery, and Olivia. I am from Youngstown, Ohio. I am new to machine embroidery and have a Brother and Singer machines. I love your towel ideas. I am starting out simple, and have embroidered onesies, bibs,
towels, and tee shirts. I am eager to learn all that I can. Your flower garden looks beautiful. Thanks for the ideas.
I have enjoyed your blog! And I know your son is proud of you for moving forward with it!
I love your designs, but especially your design on the totes you made! I have a child who has been blessed with very special teachers, and I would love to share the design on some totes (my totes may be purchased)!
Hi, Pam, thanks for writing. I will be sending you the design under separate email. I trust it will work well for you. If you have any questions, please let me know and I’ll be glad to help.
Monika
Dee. welcome to Oma’s Place and to machine embroidery. It is an expensive but very rewarding hobby, isn’t it? If I can be of any help, please let me know. I’ll be glad to answer any questions you might have. I have been at this for MANY years. I, too, have a Singer (XL 6000) and a Brother Ultima as well as my old and trusty Pfaff 7570. I use the Pfaff for sewing only, although it is quite capable of embroidering. You don’t live far from me – we live in the Dayton area. – Yes, I do love flower gardening as well, but am finding that there is little time left now for gardening. It must be time to downsize! 🙂
Thank you for such beautiful towels. I love your designs, each better than the last. Could you tell me where you purchased the towels..I really like them? And the velvet rick rack(you are right about ordinary rick rack….very hard or coarse.)Also, did you use a stablizer on top of the towel when you stitched the design. I’m a newbie and have a thousand and one questions……but not all at one time:-).
cynthia
Hi, Cynthia, so glad you like my towels. They are really fun to make and the kids love them. I have found that K Mart has the softest and best priced towels. I have not been able to find towels as soft as K Mart’s anywhere else. These particular ones I found on sale about a year ago for $5 a piece, which I thought was a great deal. The rick rack came from

Their minky is fantastic, by the way, and I use it all the time for making baby blankets. As for the towels, I never hoop my towels. I use medium tear away backing and hoop that. Then use temporary adhesive spray (my favorite is Gunold’s KK 2000 which is non toxic and ozone safe) and then place the towel on top of the tear away and secure it to the tear away with straight pins. I also spray a piece of water soluble topping and place that on top of the towel. You really need to do that or the machine can get stuck on the loops of the towel. Also, your design will sink into the towel loops if you don’t use the topping. A really good source for all those extras for embroidering is
http://allstitch.net/ They have great prices and excellent service. I get most of my supplies from there.
I hope this has helped. Let me know if you have any further questions regarding the towels or otherwise sewing related. I’ll be glad to help. I love this hobby and enjoy helping others learn about it and enjoy it, too.
Thanks for writing.
Monika
Awesome towels!
I also get most of my stuff from http://www.AllStitchEmbroiderySuplies.com. I agree with Monika’s comments about them.
Hi Oma
What design did you use please? I have a friend interested in the butterflies used on Olivia’s towel for her granddaughter.
Thanks
Hi Oma
Could you please tell me which design was used on Olivia’s towel. I have a grandmother who wants this design for her granddaughter.
Thanks
Denise
Thank you so much for these ideas. Love them, now I have to get busy. 🙂
